In Somerset the oldest tree in the orchard is called the Apple-tree Man. The fertility of the orchard resides in this tree, as does its spirit (often depicted as a bearded old man) who has been known to direct farmers to treasure. (drawing on Bristol paper 9 x 12 inches)
